I can’t believe it’s been twenty years. Like the rest of us, I’m sure, we all recall where we were that weekend. I’d seen Roland Ratzenbeger in the European Touring Car Championship in a BMW M3 at Donington Park the previous summer and I’d recalled his pace. I was looking forward to seeing what he could do in a Formula One car…..
I won’t dwell on the events further, there are many resources for that. Instead, I prefer to remember Senna with the one clip that comes to my mind every time I think of him. Him Monaco pole position in 1988. In the first video, Jo Ramirez and F1 corresdonent Gerald Donaldson recall his performance, plus his less than stellar race the following day.
And this video is the lap. I recall seeing it on UK television and being mesmerised. This in the days before driver aids and paddle shift gearboxes. This is my memory of him, giving it all he had.
EDIT – This McLaren video was released with some moving comments using original Senna interviews. While it doesn’t show the on-board lap, it’s a great tribute
