Sponsored Post – Bosch ICON, What David Really Saw

By Neill Watson1 December 2014

If you’re involved in historic motorsport or own a classic car, you’ll be familiar with the often ineffective windscreen wiper technology employed all those years ago. Just like tyre technology, wiper blade development is one of those unseen technologies that everyone takes for granted. In the same way that for many ‘Black and Round” is the main criteria for tyre choice, wiper blade selection is simply one of those chores that you give little thought to.

The Bosch ICON, Evolution and Clear Advantage series are designed to fit modern car wiper systems of the type that consist of a rubber blade only with a spring loaded clip maintaining pressure to the glass, with no metal arm. Aerodynamically shaped for maximum performance, when Bosch sent us over the information, we initially thought that they we not compatible with older cars. However, a quick read of the Bosch website reveals that these blades can be retrofitted to older generation cars using their adapter kit. So if you’ve ever had the terrifying prospect of taking Eau Rouge in the pouring rain in your classic Porsche while being blinded by spray from the car ahead, then these wipers might just be the thing to fit to your car.

And if you’re wondering about the Bosch video, it’s a rather clever reverse angle shot of that famous viral video made by young David’s father after he’s been having a rather tough trip to the dentists. David’s halucinations attracted over 120 million views and Bosch, like any clever marketing company, picked up on the success of young David’s video fame and answered the question we probably all asked, “What exactly was going through the little guys head?” If you’ve fresh memories of a dentist visit as I have, you’ll get this video, showing the reverse angle of what he saw. After each befuddled vision, a wiper swipes across the screen before the next NoX induced vision.

The information on the Bosch website here has woken me up to the fact that there’s more to windscreen wipers than thin strips of rubber that split, squeak and annoy the life out of you. The quality guys have that aspect covered, we just didn’t realise it was out there. Here’s a few more facts about the Bosch blades:

ICON Wiper Blades: up to 40% longer life

The award winning design of Bosch Icon beam blade is designed without metal or plastic brackets. This offers design and performances improvements by distributing more uniform pressure along the entire length of the blade for ultimate all-season performance that lasts up to 40% longer than other premium wiper blades. Bosch Icon is the best choice for performance in extreme weather.

Evolution Wiper Blades: exceptional visibility in any weather

Evolution beam wiper blades have an aerodynamic symmetrical spoiler that helps provide a consistent wipe. In addition, the patented design of Bosch Evolution™ features precision-tensioned steel springs that distribute more uniform pressure along the entire length of the blade for exceptional all-weather visibility.

Clear Advantage: a clear advantage

Clear Advantage is the latest addition to Bosch’s line of beam wiper blades. The precision-tensioned mono steel spring applies uniform pressure along the entire blade length providing consistent wiping performance across the windshield.
