Kall Auto Lodge is the unsung hero of many a car photo shoot, car television programme or rally test facility. You may not have heard of it, but you will almost certainly have seen it, either on location with Top Gear or as the backdrop to car photo shoots for both magazines and car manufacturers. And what many people outside of Sweden don’t realise is that you can go there yourself.

Devised in 2005 in a collaboration between Colin McCrae, Stefan Paramander and investor Stefan Bengtsson, Kall is situated around 30 minutes drive from Ostersund and the huge ski resort of Are. As they tested rally cars at the old hotel, McRae and Parmander realised that it had all of the perfect ingredients for a driver’s winter holiday facility.

The original hotel dating from the 1800’s was comprehensively rebuilt to accommodate pretty much everything that a high performance driver, PR company or car manufacturer may need as an ice driving promotional tool. And while the hotel is principally used by manufactures including Bentley, Ferrari, Porsche and Mercedes SLR, Kall also own their own fleet of 997 Porsches, Boxters and Cayennes. Combine that fleet with easy access by air – Ostersund is a big University city, not a remote, winter darkness outpost of civilisation such as the locations used for product testing in the far north – and quality hotel accommodation and restaurant managed by a chef with global credentials and you have a winning combination.

It’s over five years now since I last visited Kall Auto Lodge. Since then, they’ve built several summer driving tracks and expand their fleet of Porsches and activities. This part of Sweden is a beautiful location, yet at the same time, very close to civilisation and normal life. I can’t wait to return there.

Kall’s website with full details of year round activities can be found here http://www.kallautolodge.se/
