There have been some pretty good GT cars launched this past few years. Big Astons spring to mind as a very British and understated way to cover the ground and I’ve enjoyed some very smooth commutes in the DBS and the V8 Vantage. However, some out and out sports cars have been moving in to the GT’s niche. Ferrari’s 458 Italia is a perfectly useable car, it’s incredibly clever damping and gearshift software turning it from a track car into a Lexus at the flick of a Mannetino. The MP4/12 can also be driven every day. The ‘GT’, that car you can drive from the top of France to the bottom in one hit, has been under threat from this new generation of ‘daily driver supercars’. But the 911 Turbo is back and it’s the one I’ve been waiting to see. I make no excuse, I’ve been a 911 Turbo fan for decades and proud of it. My first bedroom wall poster was the black 930, up there alongside my Linda Lusardi poster that I discovered shortly afterwards…
The Turbo is probably one of the ultimate examples of the Darwinian nature of car evolution, something that you won’t always notice until you scroll back along the Turbo’s timeline. So we searched the Porsche archive and came up with these great images that show not just the very latest 991 Turbo, but a selection of the incarnations that are it’s family DNA. Scroll down the images and take a look at how the 911 Turbo has developed over the years. We thought they made very interesting viewing. No doubt there’s some models or sub derivatives missing.
